Word on the tip of my tongue?

Question

I'm looking for a word that would describe a dad who is sort of a no BS no screwing off kind of father, he is mostly rigid in his ways of conducting life.

I can't quite think of how to describe it, when his wife says no to something he sometimes is the one who disagrees but he's never very interactive with his children, no emotions, he is often away at work and when he's home he's either locked in his office or he goes out with his wife to parties and other social events. He's kind of afraid to hug his son for how that looks.

You are describing a "Serious" person, whose type is not so unusual. His distancing himself from his children to that extent IS unusual and is the trait that deserves to be singled out. Therefore I suggest "Undemonstrative."

He sounds like an Authoritarian to me. In dealing with looking at parent styling it means a parent who:

"...is characterized by high expectations of conformity and compliance to parental rules and directions. Authoritarian parents expect much of their child but do not explain the rules at all..."
