her car broken into and thinks they may have tried to get into the house. We put a good lock on the door and she has 2 big dogs that would protect her if they knew someone had tried to enter. She doesn't want an alarm but would like something cheap to put on the doors that alert the dogs when the door is opened. I know they make things like that for windows-Are there any things out there for doors? Thanks.

That is so scary. If you're sure that all your Mom needs is a cheap alert system I found one easily by doing a google search for window and door alarm. The ones I found are cheap, they are easy to install, and go off whenever a door or window is opened.

Dogs are a great reassurance from folks breaking into your house. I have 3 dogs, one of them is a Doberman. He helps me sleep better at night. However, we recently had an incident at our home and it got me to thinking...what if the intruder disabled the dog? I'd be out of luck. It's something to really consider. I've decided to take self-defense classes. You can never be too safe.

Good luck with this whole situation. I hope you and your Mom never have to think about anything like this again.

It can be large loud bell hooked over the doorknob or hang it on a nail in the door. Home Depot and Walmart sell a set of door and window alarms for very inexpensice. We got three or four in a package for a git. For fun we placed them on a door and they work very well. Have two different alert signs and lasted 6 months before the batteries got weak.

get her some signs from one of the alarm companies to post aroudn the house. These do work to scare off most burglers!!!

Our town house is vacant most of the time. We didn't want to be bothered with phone calls everytime something happened at the house. We got the signs from a company that uses "movement" technology rather than wires!
We haven't had an attempted break in since posting those signs on a couple of the windows and in the front yard.

It can be as simple as a Christmas reindeer bell on a rope hung on inside of each 'outside' door. Leaving it on the door or hung in middle of upper part of door is something easy to get used to yet will attract the dogs.

One of the hardest things to do is to convince an elderly parent that YOU are in charge now. Mom needs a safer environment, unless you plan to get her a handgun and put concertina wire all around the yard.

The turds that are terrorizing her will not stop until they're blown away by the Cops or another street gang, so please get with a Minister or a counselor at the local Senior Center and look at options.

Maybe she can sell that old house and move in with you. Or you can move in with her...but don't leave her alone, please.

A chain that latches into a bolt on the door frame, you can probably get it at Home Depot or Lowes.
