“ There was all that time when we knew Freddie was on the way out, we kept our heads down. ”
—Brian May

Queen never actually officially disbanded and after Freddie mercury died in 1991 the band were still able to put out an album in 1995 which included Mercury's voice recorded from previous sessions with the band. As you now probably know, Farrokh Bulsara aka Freddy Mercury was a homosexual and died of full blown aids in 1991.
Brian May (of no relation to James May) is still active and does benefit and charity stuff related to AIDS awareness..

Without the late great Freddie M there IS no Queen, so of course the band broke up. Freddie contracted AIDS from his gay lifestyle and only announced that he had the illness the day before he died, although many people had suspected it because of the deterioration in his appearance over the last few months of his life.

after Freddie Mercury's death the band felt there WAS no Queen without the moustachioed warbler and that basically the band was no more. Bass player John Deacon went into retirement from the music biz whilst Brian May and Roger Taylor continued to work sporadically on various projects. They reformed late last year after putting Paul Rogers in for vocal duties and altho they are still called Queen - to all intents and purposes the group died when Freddie did

After working on various solo projects during 1988 the band released The Miracle in 1989. Speculation returned of a possible breakup of the band in the near future, or that Mercury might be suffering from health problems.

On 23 November 1991, in a prepared statement made on his deathbed, Mercury finally confirmed that he had AIDS. Within twenty-four hours of the announcement, Mercury died.

The band terminated their Capitol Records contract and signed a deal with Hollywood Records as their new U.S label.

Queen never actually disbanded, although their last album of original material, titled Made in Heaven, was released in 1995, four years after Mercury's death. It was constructed from Mercury's final recording sessions in 1991, plus material left over from their previous studio albums. In addition, re-worked material from Mercury's solo album Mr. Bad Guy and a track originally featured on the first album of Taylor's side-project The Cross were included. John Deacon's last involvement with the band was in 1997, when the band recorded the track "No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young)".

It was the last original song recorded by all three remaining members of Queen, and it was released as a bonus track on the Queen Rocks compilation album later that year.

ALSO:
Freddie was bisexual, thus he contracted AIDS through unprotected male intercourse.

Even if Freddie Mercury hadn't died, I think the group would have split up anyway. Their popularity had been in a steep decline in the 1980s and that was in part due to the increasingly inferior material they were releasing. For example, does anybody really think "Radio Ga-Ga" is a classic? I don't. I much prefer the music they did in the 1970s.

the lead singer Freddy mercury died, and no one would ever replace him, but I don't think that the rest of the band have split up

Well, Queen split up because Freddie Mercury, their star and heart, died of AIDS. He died of it... well, it's a sexually transmitted disease, so yeah.
