What music did you raise them on? Did you play them your favorites or on the kids music before they were old enough to pick their own music? Do you agree with their music tatse now?

I'm just wondering :0)

When my wife was pregnant with both our daughters ,i used to place headphones on her stomach playing some laidback tunes like Paul Simon, Paul McCartney etc.etc.

Both my daughters grew up to love music .At the age of two my eldest daughters favourite album was Neil youngs "Harvest" .She would only go to sleep listening to it.My youngest loves The stones
Now they are 15&12 and are into hip-hop (thats o.k. ,not my fav sounds but keeps me in touch a bit , although i do laugh at all the old tunes they recycle ) but any time we are in the car and I put on Pink Floyd,The Stones ,Led Zep or The beatles ,I can guarantee that they will both be singing along within 5 minutes . I am proud that they know all the old stuff and like it enough to not totally spaz out when I play it long and loud !!!!!! lol

A lot of the music my kid, who's 11, likes now is from the Disney Channel such as Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers, etc. It's not my favorite thing (I just tune it out or go into another room) but if it makes him happy that's all that matters. He's also into some country which is influenced by his mom and his aunt which I also don't care for. My major contiubution into his musical tastes is The Ramones which he really enjoys. I'm sure it will change with time (and hope, lol) but I just want him to be presented with a diverse selection so he grows to appreciate a wide spectrum of music styles.

My kids got into music back in the late 1980's. They stumbled upon a copy of the soundtrack from the film 'American Graffiti', which was all music from the 50's, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino etc. They were hooked, and from that point onward, their musical tastes evolved in the same order rock and roll evolved, but 30 years after the fact!
By the 1990's they were into; The Beatles, Stones, Cream, The Who, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Budgie, Judas Priest, and so on, in that order. I can remember my youngest daughter lost a couple of friends because she listened to all of that "old music", and wasn't into 'New Kids on the Block' back in 1991. She said, "I prefer the Beatles White Album over that crap!" It must have been tough for them growing up when they were 20 years behind what all the other kids were listening to.
Now in 2007, their tastes have caught up with them, as they listen to many current bands as well as the classics.
But I love the fact that their tastes developed the way they did. My kids know more about music than anyone their age!
Oh, and they hate EMO!

My daughter used to like the Husker Du and Bob Mould I pounded into her, but now she's getting independent and choosing her own. Country (ugh) of all things. But I'm not going to interfere. Its better than the Hanna Montana crap most kids listen to now. My 9 year old son likes whatever songs are on Nickelodeon. He really doesnt give a crap at this point about pop music. He showed some interest in playing sax so i downloaded a bunch of james brown for him, but now he's off that and picking up my guitar, so it wont be long until he gets a new style he likes.

I've raised them on a variety of music. Classical, Kidsongs, Raffi, Christian, Classical Rock, Alternative, Punk etc....
I have four kids ranging in age from 12 to 19 and they now love a variety of music as well. They have actually introduced me to rap (which I thought I would never enjoy) and some of the newest artists out there like Modest Mouse, Stereolab, Mika, Wolfmother and so on.

I expose my son to pretty much everything (though I do censor........so no MSI until he goes to sleep)

I play whatever I'm in the mood for.....and he actually makes requests. His favorite genres are Doo Wop, Garage Rock, and Classic rock.......as well as all the kiddie cds he likes (I HATE the Wiggles.....)

He's so into music, that I have him raid my iTunes to make mommy approved cds that we listen to in the car. His most recent one has The Kinks, The Tokens, Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin (Fool In The Rain is a fave of his), ? and the Mysterians, The Doors, etc....

I think its funny that a 5 year old has a definite opinion on the music he likes and doesn't.

well I must say my girls and I are soul-mates in many ways.
When they were babies, they grew up and slept every night listening to classical music 24/7. Mostly Mozart, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Albinoni, Haydn and Bach. Once they were around two years old they started to listen to all kinds of music with me. So even now, they are teenagers, they listen to Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole, some hours later they might listen to Dream Theater and Deep Purple or Pink Floyd and hours later to some 80ies Pop Music. So I guess they inherited my musical taste and are very heterogeneous.

My youngest one surprises me a lot, since she has a heavy taste so to say. She likes Metallica and Rammstein but also she listens to a lot of Movie scores of John Williams and Opera too. She is 11 years old and does not like Pop and Dance much.
The eldest one listens to some music like Nightwish, Lacrimosa and other Gothic stuff, which I like in small doses only.
The sandwich daughter ( middle one) likes all kinds of music but most of all guitar rock, she plays some guitar too, so I guess that's why her favorite music is Gary Moore, David Gilmore and Marc Knopfler. But I do hear her in her room listening to some Pop music like Madonna, Christina Aguilera or Backstreet Boys.

Thank God none of them listens to Rap or hip hop which I dislike and don't understand. But if they would, also thank God for Ipods and headphones.....

I didn't try to make them listen to the type of music I like. I tried playing a broad range of music and let them make their own choices. As a result, both my daughters like a wide variety of music, ranging from classical to metal.
