I learned to make a chain when I was a child, but that is the extent of my crochetting knowledge. Does anyone know where I can find basic crochet instructions on line so that I can learn to make catnip mice?

Thanks for that first answer. What I need before I can use this pattern, though, is basic instructions on how to crochet. Anyone?

If you are learning to crochet, I'd first just make a sqaure and sew up two of the sides, stuff with catnip, then sew up the last side. This way your cat has a wonderful toy and you can get used to crocheting.
You can start with learning single crochet (sc)

she also shows you how to turn.
sewing up the sides:

Then on to mice.
Here's an pretty easy pattern

In her round 11, she tells you how to decrease (dec) which will make curves.
here's a little movie on doing a sc decrease

here's what a slip stitch is (sl st)

Then you can start adding details:

(this is cute)

good general sites to learn to crochet:

You should also check out your public library. they have a lot of "how to" books and lots of pattern books in the craft section. Good luck!
