I would tell them that you're having financial problems ahead of time....but buy them a few things, even if they're cheap.

I would try to spend $10-$20 each.
You still have a month to save up.

See their face on Christmas morning? What is this some cruel joke or something? If you are serious then go to a local church or Good Will and ask if there are any ways they can help you get some toys or x-mas gifts for your child. That's what toy drives are for. They are seen all over cities during this time of year at dept. and grocery stores where people give money or items away to help families in need.

Tell them before. Let them know that Mom has to make sure that the lights stay on in the house and the car has gas, so there isnt enough $ to get presents. Then, re itterate the TRUE menaing of Christmas and explain that good health, family and a safe home is very important. You child may be hurt no matter what you say, but at least give them a heads up. I had some rough Christmases as a kid, so I know what its like.

What kind of question is that? Who would want to see the expression on the face of a kid who got no presents. Of course you should sit them down ahead of time and explain the situation. Just because you can't buy toys doesn't mean you cant find something creative out of found items or something around the house that isn't being used. Christmas isn't just about spending money. It's about family and spending time together, besides the obvious religious things.

Not sure what your asking... you aren't able to get him/her anything? Or just one thing in particular?

If you aren't able to buy something maybe you could make something. Apparently, you have the internet, so why not look up some craft ideas online. My son and I do that alot... and we have great fun. Besides, it's not what you get them... that's not what Christmas is about. And ... sit down and talk with him/her about the real meaning of Christmas. Be sure they understand it's not about recieving gifts, but giving... and the birth of Jesus. Then make some stuff to give them. Or... drop by a church and see if they can help. They usually have toy drives for people who are unable to buy gifts for their children.

If you are unable to get one thing in particular... I would once again explain the true meaning of Christmas, then let them know that they may or may not get every thing they want.

Good luck!

I would let them know, in a gentle way, that it is not likely that it will be under the tree. I usually tell my kids that they are too young for the item, such as a cell phone or a laptop, (the convertible request from my 5 year old sent me over the edge...).

I then divert the conversation to what Christmas is really about, and that they are very lucky to have what they do, since there are others in the world less fortunate.

I don't think so. I think if you give them clues, then the suspense will build up, and when you give them a gift on Christmas day, they will be sooo surprised. And with those clues, be extremely vague, 'cause if they guess it then there wont be that much of a surprise. Stay vague and wait until Christmas morning. I should know, I'm a teen.

I always ask my children what they want, this year my oldest son asked for a laptop, which is out of my budget. I simply said "unfortunately this year it is not an option" his reply "so I guess car is out of the question.

Definitely, tell them ahead of time. My children know I do the best and work very hard to support them, they understand.

You could say, if there was any possible way, I would, but things are tight this year.

You should just make sure they know that you don't have enough money to purchase gifts for them. Just say "Darling's I'm so sorry but the buget has been a bit tough latley, I don't think we will have a christmas this year..." In your own words.. sweetly.. =) I really hope you get the money to do whatever you need to do though.
Good luck on telling them!
