Gold melts at 1064 C, and a propane torch is hot enough to do it. A porcelain crucible (available from chemical supply houses) is convenient.

You need a crucible capable of handling high heat. You might not be able to reach the right temperature without good equipment. If I recall correctly, gold melts above 1000 deg C and it might be as high as 1500 dec C. I don't think a crucible and Bunsen burner can get that high. You might be looking and some sort of oxygen supported flame.

This is NOT a project to attempt near anything that is flammable. At that head, wood would ignite instantly and lesser items (like paper and alcohol) would ignite nearly explosively. Not good to be around.

Also, if you are going to do this, use tongs, gloves, and eye protection. An expendable set of clothes and a flame-retardant apron wouldn't hurt either. I've still got a scar on my hand from just trying to melt quartz, which was a much lower temparature than anything you want to melt.
