Anything drawn/painted/animated by artists or studios automatically becomes 'copyrighted' soon as it hits the public's eye.

Some studios/artists don't mind fans making use of the characters, but the rights belong to the studio/artists, not to the people using the characters for fun. So the average person can't do a bunch of drawings and put them on t-shirts or mugs to sell. That'll get you a letter from a lawyer really fast!

major studios also trademark their cartoon characters, which gives additional protection from "look alike" imitations and similar commercial rip-offs.
