Or must you, like some, keep a radio and/or TV on around the clock? Why would someone opt for almost constant distraction, I wonder?

I love quiet. Since children still live at home when they go off on weekends I leave everything off except the occasional movie. But when I was single I use to fall asleep with the tv on..it ran 24/7 but have not done that in about 7 years. Sleep better now that I have gotten use to silence.

No radio or tv but when it comes time to sleep I do need the sound of a fan. I have become addicted to it. I turn in on no matter what the weather outside is like.

I prefer the sound of silence and get up a half hour early just to have that time and quiet all to myself.I also sleep with ear plugs to get more quiet time .

AAARRRGGHHH!!!
My wife HAS to have the TV on when we go to sleep, so when she has the option to go visit her family in Oregon with her parents, I all but push her out the door (not really ;)) so I can go to sleep in darkness and quiet.

When I write anything remotely creative, I also need quiet.

That said, I almost always have music on in my car. Go figure.

it does not make a difference. I can fall asleep with lights on, radio or TV going or complete darkness.

Silence is nice, but not too much -- think there's gonna be enough of that when my hearing is completely gone instead of mostly.
