Let x = the amount that two children get
x/2 = amount third child gets

x + x + x/2 = 80,000

5/2 x = 80,000

x = (80000)(2/5)
x = 32,000

$32,000
$32,000
$16,000

That works! hope you understand it.

Solution :
Let X = the amount got by the first 2 grandchildren
X/2 = the amount got by the 3rd grandchild

Let the equation be :
X + X + X/2 = 80,000
get the least common denominator
(2X + 2X + X)/2 = 80,000
transpose 2 by cross multiplying
2X + 2X + X = 160,000
5X = 160,000
X = 160,000/5
X = 32,000
X/2 = 16,000

Check :
X + X + X/2 = 80,000
32,000 + 32,000 + 16,000 = 80,000
80,000 = 80,000

This needs a simple equation really.

Let x be the amount.

$80, 000 = x + x + 1/2x
$80, 000 = 2.5x
x = $32000

The two grandchildren each received $32 000 while the other gets $16 000.

2x+1/2x=2,5x=80000
80000 /2.5x=32000
x=32000
2x=64000
1/2x=16000

64000+16000= 80000
