Year, make, model of vehicle would be helpful.
Make sure you have enough coolant in the radiator. Improper levels of coolant make it difficult for the temperature sensor to get a proper reading.
If you have plenty of coolant, then you may have a bad temperature sensor. Replace the temperature sensor.

The temp Gage consist of 3 parts . electrical source , temp sensor , and gage. I would first try the temp sensor , please don`t get it confused with the engine temp sensor for the comp. To rule out temp sensor unplug jump a wire from the harness to ground and the gage should go full hot. to rule out electrical source unplug sensor place multi meter between harness and ground and should get at least 5 volts dc . I don`t exact voltage sorry. If both check out it is the gage

you have a faulty gage on it or a sending unit that's not telling when its hot,you need to let it cool before ever adding coolant to it,and replace the sending unit, most of the time that's what causes it not tor read right, that will have to be repaired and also the problem with it over heating will have to be found before you drive it,you can ruin a good engine by running it hot, good luck on it.

If it's so low on coolant that the sensor is not in the water, it will show cold. Check your level. If the coolant level is adequate, the sensor may need to be replaced, assuming it's plugged in.
Note: Do NOT add coolant to a hot motor, wait until it cools if you have to add.

initiate with checking the inlet and outlet temps of the hoses to the heatercore. a save can try this for you, yet you're able to do it your self with a floor thermometer. to easily initiate upkeep i might initiate with the thermostat with the aid of fact that's the main inexpensive and easiest area to alter. frequently below $10 that is particularly worth a shot. different probable issues may be the heatercore or mixture-door. shop a watch on coolant ranges and fogging interior the cabin of the vehicle. the two might element in direction of a heatercore. in case you narrow it right down to the heatercore attempt a opposite coolant flush till now changing it except that is cracked and leaking. solid success!!!!

how do you no it is overheating
wut if this is the normal operating temperature
well if it is overheating and not showing it could be bad sensor sneding unit or wire or fuse
it could be thermostat or clogged radiator or low coolant or water pump or watre pump gasket
DO NOT DRIVE IT IF IT IS OVERHEATING YOU CAN SEVERLY DAMAGE YOUR ENGINE AND REPAIRING THE DAMAGE FROM OVERHEATING WOULD BE AROUND 3000$$$$$$$$$$$$$
