They say upgrading RAM is the easiest way to improve performance. When you low on RAM the computer uses "Virtual Memory" which basically uses the Hard Drive (HDD) as a memory source. Writing and Reading from the HDD is slower than RAM. So, when it within your budget, RAM is worth maxing out, or buying what you can.
The benefit of upgrading the HDD is only if you need more room for Programs or Files like Pictures, Music and Videos.
If, you have a 60 GB HDD (For example) and you only using 20 GB then it not an advantage to up grade the HDD. But, say you using 59 GB of the 60 GB and you download Music regular, then you may want to consider a larger HDD.

I don't know if this applies for all laptops, but when I first got mine it had 512 mb of memory and now after about a year and a half, it has only 504 mb. Upgrading memory will make the transfer rate between it and the CPU better and more application will be able to run at once. Also, a higher memory allows the laptop's built in graphics chipset to run at a higher speed (some 128 mb ones only allow something like 64 mb with less than 500 mb of memory).

Upgrading a hard drive has the general space advantages, and also with the new RAID and SATA technologies will allow you to move and copy files faster.

Memory is what makess it go faster the more memory you have the faster your laptop goes. if you have like 512MB it will go very very slow, you want at least 1GB HArd drive is how much you can hold on the computer so you proboly want lots.

the same as upgrading them for a desktop/tower pc. memory will increase you speed and how fast programs operate. upgrading the hard drive will increase your storage space and the speed at which data is read, written, and accessed.
