Hi Hearts & Stripes. A 10 gallon tank is way too small for 3 Goldfish so you need to be getting a larger one as soon as possible. It needs to be at least 30 gallons with fitted lid & a filter rated for 50 gallons or over-this is because Goldfish make a lot of waste. You can use your old filter in the new tank together with your new filter for a couple of months-this will help to kick-start the cycle in the new tank.

While you have them in the 10 gallon you need to be doing regular partial water changes using same temperature, treated water every 3 or 4 days of approx 50%. Don't worry-the good bugs live in your filter & gravel-not in the water-by changing the water you are giving your fish the equivalent of a breath of fresh air in a stuffy room. In addition to the water changes & at the same time you need to be vacuuming your gravel & gently rinsing the filter media in this old water. You need to be removing the loose debris while maintaining the colonies of good bugs in your filter & gravel.

I would advise not getting any more Goldfish unless you have a 55 gallon or larger & even then only get 2 more at the most & buy the first one several weeks after setting up your new tank-then the second one several weeks after that. This is so you don't overload your filter's biological capacity.

Clean weekly, don't get more, get a bigger tank or try something besides fish that will be overcrowded in your tank. Three Goldfish should have at least a 30 gallon tank, and they will out grow that one in a couple of years.
