There are also a lot of men who cannot read a repair manual to get the right torque sequence for the head of a chevy small block, and a lot of women who can't read a cookbook to prepare a great meal.
Aren't you special that you can do both?

Cooking is more of an art form. Most men that can read tech manuals couldn't put a custom paint job on a car to save there lives, even with an instruction manual w/ pics and diagrams. I am a single father of two since my youngest was two weeks, so I have done pretty much all the parental responsibilities that were required. After seven years with my little girl, I still can't braid her hair for the life of me. I don't cook meals that require much time to prep or need my attention. The truth is I have no passion to be good at those things. I look forward to fixing up the apartment or tackling some renovating project because I enjoy fixing things. The mans job is to fix things. Women brake them, and we fix them. A very balanced relationship. God is very smart.

I believe there are quite a few answers to this great question.
First of all, men and women are very capable of doing the same tasks but the motivation is different. Men like problem solving and fixing things themselves, where women like to do things for others in order to feel accomplished, hence cooking things. Obviously that is a broad generalization but that is a simple solution.
Culture comes into play as well, because the past has taught that men and women have their "places" and are raised to understand things that are in the realm of their "place".
The gap between the two has become drastically smaller as the gender roles start to cross. So in the future I think we will start to see that more men will be cooking and making repairs and visa versa....for the record I can do both too.

A basic pyscholgy problem. Most men think that cooking is for women and vice-versa. Chances are if men cooked and women fixed cars the same thing would happen.
Its all in the brain

Its your mindset...If you are really interested in fixing a chevy small block head...then you will be able to read the manual and fix it...Same goes with cooking...

Either sex can do both, but some are convinced that it's the opposite sex's job. There is no reason that a woman can't change a tire or a man can't sew. It's sad that people decide to close their minds and fit into the stereotypes.
I change my own flats, change my own oil and assemble my own furniture BTW!

Mr.Mom you are very lucky that you can do both. I am not very lucky with either task. There are many woman who would find you a great catch. Why this is usually the case I haven't the foggiest idea other than the way we were raised as different sexes.

It's a stereotype. Come on. I was raised by my father. Give me a break! It's a MINDSET we are drilled. Yes you can. You just have to 'break through' that inner barrier and cook you some fried chicken and grits. Um, or perhaps breakfast in bed for the woman you love. Okay, I don't know. (I was talking to those who can't do it, because obviously you say here you can)
