Its a historical fact that the Japanese army did kill, rape and tortior the people of Nanjing. Really doesn't matter if it was 100,000 or 300,000. The Japanese Government has admitted to the Deaths only disagrees on the numbers.

Lowball estimates go at about 100000 dead. The highball estimates go at about 300000. I reckon the truth lies somewhere in between.
The real reason this is such a sensitive point for Japanese ultranationalists is that Hirohito's brother was mixed up in it. According to them the JIA didn't kill anybody at Nanjing, but if they had of there was a good reason. If somebody did get killed at Nanjing, then the imperial family had nothing to do with it. However it would have been all good to kill people at Nanjing because it was all for the imperial family that didn't know anything about it even though Chichibu was there. And people wonder why they lost the war?

Japan calls it as Nanjing operation (cos Japan was an attacker). Tragedy occurred in the city and Japan also knows it.
But the population at that time was around 200,000 (documents of Nanjing are found). How could people kill more than the population?
3,000, 30,000 and 300,000 are the numbers which Chinese often use when they exaggerate something.
As a matter of fact, they were saying the number was 25,000 first. Then it became 30,000. Now it is 300,000.
Financial support for China from Japan finished today. Both nations agreed to end ODA loans. (US$ 20 bil was a grant assistance, donation, though )

Where is this going?
This type of question requires answers found through other means, not asking a bunch of random people at Yahoo Answers in the Japanese travel section.
How are you going to choose the correct answer?
"Oh, I think maybe this one is correct."
And then, here you are at university:
"In WW2, Japanese soldiers killed 300,000 Chinese in the city of Nanjing, blah blah blah."
(Non-American) Teacher: "Is that true? What sort of sources did you use?"
You: "Oh. Yahoo Answers! It's good."

I suggest you to see wikipedia for precise information. In my point of view, it was one of the biggest mistakes of the two country, and it's true, as most of the history books say. A lot were murdered, buried alive, raped, and so on. It's a fact, it can't be changed, but most of the people who were responsible for it was punished for their sins during the late 1940's.(as i know they were hanged)
War crimes happen everywhere, also in China(just think about the 1927-28's events).
And just to mention, I'm really sad about some other answers...
