You have to do the very best you can with whatever finances you have.
Personally, it's just the very closest of family I buy for now. And also it is right that it is the kids that we do Christmas for.
Nothing beats their little faces lighting up on Christmas day. Does it?

Our family Christmas consists of about 80 people. We divide the adults from the children. The children draw names, and the adults do a naughty Santa type of thing where we each bring a $20 gift and draw numbers to see who gets to pick a gift first. The next person can either choose a new gift or take the one that the first person opened. You keep doing this down the line until all the gifts are opened. You can only be forced to give up your gift twice. Then your gift is off limits. It's best to be the first or last person because the last person gets to pick from all the now opened gifts, and the first person who opened a gift then gets to choose to keep what they have or exchange with someone else.

my boyfriends family always does a big christmas together, so this year my boyfriend and i are going to make some kind of gift basket to give out to his families. something like homemade cookies & an ornament, a couple packets of hot coco and a goofy xmas mug. we're short on money this year, so this would be a good gift from the heart. if we do have some extra cash, we might buy the little ones a small gift since they never seem like sharing a gift. :P
my family however is a little more spread out... not to mention 5 states away, so i will probably buy them personal gifts since it would only be my mom and sister and then my dad.

I don't know how everyone else does it but this is how my family does it...
The kids are the ones that really count at Christmas at least in the USA!
We buy for the babies!!!
Then all guys buy a simple gift for the guys and all the gals buy a simple gift for the gals.
These go into what we call a "grab bag!"
And we all have great fun with this!!!
I hope you and your families do as well!!!

I give gifts to my husband, our children, 5 friends, and very small "token" type gifts to 8 co-workers. I quit giving to my siblings and parents a long time ago. Our families started getting too big when my siblings and I started getting married, and we were all young and broke lol. We decided then to not exchange gifts any longer. We do, however, get each other something if we see something one of them would want, but rarely is it at Christmas time, and we give it to each other as soon as we buy it. We don't wait until Christmas or a birthday (we quit exchanging birthdays, too).

Picking names is a good idea for large families. For friends, candy, nuts, a couple magazines, or even a gag gift is fun. ( stick and a lump of coal ) A gift I have given to a family is stuff to go with ice cream - sprinkles, nuts, toppings, nice ice cream dishes.

I absolutely give gift to my parents, husband and kids. The others we pick names. Otherwise it's just to costly in a large family to be able to get everyone something.
Friends get cards

Instead of buying every person a gift, just buy a gift for the families. Like maybe your cousin has a husband/wife and they have a ton of kids; just buy one gift for that family.
