suggestions?? do not use vista, if you will use it for gaming, you will have to make your pc parts a bit higher for the game requirements.. old games wont work on vista..
well, if you are really want to use it, buy Dell, they are cheap but they are not mostly for gaming..
if you would do some serious gaming, build your own rig..it will be much cheaper than ready made desktops..
if you want vista you should have at least 3.0Ghz of processor speed..at least 2 gig ram..
if you go with xp, probably you will just need 2.5 ghz or up and 1 gig of ram..but putting 2gig will be good for gaming..

Core 2 Duo CPU, either E6550 or E6750. Slight difference in price, decide base on your final cost and budget
Then you would want to have 2 Gig of RAM.
Do NOT get 4 Gig unless you're running 64 bit version of vista. Some of the memory will go to waste on a 32 bit vista as there's not enough address for it.
You can get intel mainboard, they are not great and not overclockable, but good for budget concious user. DG33FB perhaps. They are very stable, I use one myself.
GeForce 8800GT graphic card.
Spend the rest on HDD, DVD burner, and oh, don't forget a good PSU, at least 450W true power PSU. 550W or more would be better, in the sense that its more future proof, should you wish to upgrade later on. Video cards are power sucker these days.
I think there should be enough left to get a good LCD monitor. And speaker system

This is a sweet gaming PC and it is way under priced, and will let you have $500.00 left in your price range. Hope this helps.

I would not recommend getting vista. You don't have as many features as xp. As for as hardware goes, you should get a pc with centrino duo and at least 2 Gigahertz.
Make sure you have at least 1GB of RAM and 160GB ROM.
A good website is dell.com wher you can customize your pc just the way you want.

Do some research first, and a good source is the magazine "Computer Shopper". They'll have reviews of various pc's and you can go from there.
