It's clear that both won't be on the team next year. They are not going to give Quinn 20 Million to warm the bench, and Anderson would get a payday elsewhere before riding the bench. To me it seems you have to go with the hot hand, which is Anderson. This guy is taking a 7-4 team, which could very well be a 9-2 team into the playoffs. Does Quinn get a shot at some point this year? The Browns are said to be close to franchising Anderson. Can you risk any progress you have made as team by not sticking with Anderson after this year? Which teams would be in the hunt for a QB and what would they offer in draft picks? Who would you go with?

ADIL-I'm not too sure the Browns gave Quinn 20 Million Dollars because they felt sorry for him. I will say this about Quinn, during the pre-season he lit it up and was dead accurate versus some teams 1st string defense. Of course how does that transalte over a 16 game season. It's a real crapshoot.

Mark B- But the Browns are close to putting a franchise tag on Anderson, and he IS YOUNG (24 I think), I'm not sure if franchising him is the way to go if they plan on having Brady Quinn as their future QB. Of course they may be franchising him to suck away a teams draft picks if they want to go after Anderson.

That's a great question.
I think Derek has absolutely more than proven himself. They should keep him!!! He's done an awesome job with Cleveland.
I've been totally impressed with Cleveland this year; and I'm a huge Steelers fan!
Sorry, they should let Brady Quinn go bye bye.

First off, Phil Savage has clearly said that he does not mind having a $2 million a year backup quarterback. Most of Quinn's salary is tied up in incentives, not salary, so it's not a big deal to let him sit.
Secondly, I don't know who told you that the Browns are close to franchising DA, but that's a bunch of crap. They're not going to give him $10 million a season anytime soon. (When you franchise a player, you must give him the average salary of the top 10 players at that position in the league).
What they are MOST likely to do is give Anderson the highest tender as a restricted free agent, and see what happens. That way they only have to designate $2.5 million for him, and any team that wants him must give up a first and third round pick. If nobody picks him up, the Browns have another year to make up their mind. If someone makes an offer, they can decide whether to match it or take the picks, which could be very high.
I personally am not too worried about what they do. If the Browns let Anderson go, it's because they're 100% confident that Quinn can run the offense as well or better than Anderson. People can speculate about Quinn's ability all they want, but the only ones who've been watching him practice with the team for the last year is the Browns management, so I trust their judgment over all others.

It's simple. I'd go with Anderson becaues he is proven that he is good. Even last year he played good on a terrible Browns team. Although this year with help his true skills are brought to light. They weren't even looking forward that much to Brady Quinn because he slipped all the way in the draft. And many people question Brady's accuracy and ability to play at the next level. More than likely Browns will go with the sure option with Derek Anderson or they would be stupid not too. Brady Quinn is unproven and has many question marks around his skills. Perhaps the only reason he was drafted is because he was from Notre Dame and Browns felt sorry for him and wanted to look nice.

This is the "Rivers-Brees" dilemma all over again.
After this season Anderson is a "restricted Free-agent". If the Browns are smart they will KEEP him. Why? He's a "proven" QB, Quinn has'nt done anything yet. You've seen this season how quickly a team goes "down the drain" when their #1 is out. You are already paying Quinn, "Salary cap" constraints won't let you trade him.Besides he needs to be analyzed & developed to see what you have with him. If you let Anderson get away, who are you going to replace him with? Quinn is NOT better "right now". So don't say "Quinn". Anyone "better" than Anderson probably isn't "available", so you keep BOTH.

I have seen that people been comparing this situation to Brees and Rivers a couple of years ago, which is right. Anderson is gonna be the one gone next year, b/c the fans are gonna want Quinn to take over next year if Anderson doesn't deliver if they make the playoffs. I see Anderson getting traded to either Chicago or to Atlanta. He's probably worth a 2nd to 3rd round pick.

Well, I think they would be stupid if they didn't make sure this season was not a fluke with Anderson before they ship Quinn out...They'll have them both next year, and then decide...If Anderson performs again like this year, look for Quinn to get traded to someone like Miami, whose fans wanted Quinn over Ted Ginn, Jr...I guess Atlanta is always a possibility, but I think Miami would make the deal for the fans...

Please send Derek Anderson to Chicago!
The two cannot co-exist much longer. The $$$ the Browns have paid Quinn completely ties him to their franchise for the forseeable future. They will soon get pressure to get some ROI for that investment. To do that, they will need to start him over Anderson. When they do that, Anderson will want out---immediately.
This situation has replicated itself all over the NFL in the past few years. Upstart, underpaid (relative) skill player has a hot-shot, well paid prime draft pick staring over their clipboard. The incumbent is playing well (and at times at Pro Bowl caliber), but eventually the younger and higher paid player will get their turn.
Drew Brees and Philip Rivers. Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson. There are many examples of this phenomenon.
