If you leave them the way they are they will rot and can kill the grass under them. You should rake them, or run over them with the lawn mower. That will cut them into smaller pieces and not be so bad for your grass.

I would imagine raking them would work better. Leafs take a lot of time to decompse on their own. Maybe consider how much you use your lawn where the leafs are before making your decision. Like if you have a dog that uses the lawn you might want to rake so you don't walk into a surprise.

You should rake them (it's good exercise).

A thick layer of leaves will deprive the grass of sunlight. If you want to save some time, you can mow your lawn instead and basically create a mulch out of the leaves - this will be absorbed into the soil a lot faster than full leaves.

My solution is somewhere in between. I have a mulching mower. Mowing the leaves twice in different directions reduces the leaves to very small pieces, increases the rate of decomposition, recycles the nutrients into the soil, and helps insulate the roots of my grass. It does not look quite as good as a "leafless" lawn in the fall, but in the spring I have one of the best looking lawns in the neighborhood.

It's funny we take away all the nutrients from our lawns by bagging clippings and raking leaves, then pay big bucks for some service to put fertilizer back in the soil.

Sorry...you need to rake them up into a pile. Leaves won't break down laying in the yard...besides it can smother your lawn with too much thatch build up. Or...after they have all fallen....get out the mower and shred them up. If your mower had a catcher it makes it easier to control mulch.

They say that if you leave the leafs in the yard to decompose then it would be easier to plant anything and the soil will be good but sometimes your yard wont look very good and if you rake them then you will have a pretty yard.

Personally i would leave them to decompose it would help the soil

Just say "yes, dear" and rake the leaves. It's faster than getting a reprieve from sleeping in the dog house and you won't have to listen to her whine while you do it.

i live in the woods, my house is surounded by a few hundred trees, i never rake them, and every thing grows like being in a green house, so let em lay, better for the grass,

what ejb said, I would have said it but he got there first! Best thing to do, she won't even notice them once they are mulched. And you will get a gold star!
