%, or per cent, literally means 'out of one hundred'. So, when you have any number which has a percent symbol after it, it's value is actually .01 (or 1/100) multiplied by that value.

So, 6.8% is equal to .068.
Now, 100% is all of something, and 50% is half of something.
100% = 100 x .01 = 1
50% = 50 x .01 = .5 = 1/2
So, 100% of 500 (1 x 500) is 500, 50% of 500 (.5 x 500) is 250.
This applies to every other number.
.068 x 500 = 34
