Ask them their names...all girl pill bugs are named Jill, and all boy pill bugs are named Bill. :-)

Seriously, it's a good question. Pill bugs have no obvious external genitalia- you'd probably have to dissect them to find out or something else terrible- poor little things- they must be so confused!

I think you will have to do a little research- they may grow to different sizes, have different behaviors, or hatch out different times of the year and at different rates.

No offense; but an ODD Q in this category, and obviously you'll get chuckles answers.

I suspect it isn't by the size of the males "PILLS"???

It's pretty common knowledge that species/Gender ID is generated by a few factors. In Many it relates to size; while in others it relates to coloration; and body decoration.

With no offense meant at all to my opposite gender; I think any study of a species can easily determine WHO is usually the power structure...that being the female.

I'm probably confused by wondering WHY you ASK???

This is almost impossible to do without a low power microscope, and a way of immobilizing the pillbugs.

In general, there is no real difference in size between males and females.

Apparently, you can stick a small piece of clear plastic tape to their backs; then grab the tape with tweezers and flip them over to examine their underside with the microscope, or at least a good magnifying glass. Male pillbugs have a set of specialized segments("pleopods") on the underside of their tail section. See this image:

the male is the one on the right.

The same way you determine a male alligator from a female alligator, I think. You have to quickly insert your finger up its rectum (its butt) to feel for a penis.

Seriously, does it matter?

Now, you tell me. How do you you tell a female alligator from a male alligator? It doesn't matter does it?

Here's one for you. This will really mess you up: How do you tell a female ladybug from a male ladybug? I just gotta know so bad.
