In my family it's a cup of hot tea.
I think it maybe the warmth of the drink that soothes us.

Sure! If the cup has a major food chain name on it and you proceed to spill it in your lap and experience 2nd degree burns and scream out in real pain and someone calls 911 for you and an ambulance transports you to the nearest emergency room (keeping the cup) and you keep copies of all your hospital paperwork and take said papers and cup (as evidence) to a cheap lawyer and commence to sue the dickens out of the restaurant who quickly wants to settle out-of-court to eliminate publicity for an undisclosed sum of money which solves everything!
