I'm going to Ohio to see some family and will be there for a while. My old friend from there and I want to take a little inexpensive road trip for about 3 or 4 days...we used to take road trips all the time when I lived there.

Where's somewhere fun but inexpensive to go? (leaving from ohio)

Hocking Hills!!! It's beautiful!!! I'm from the area. Check out Ash Cave and Old Man's Cave. And Athens is a great little college town!!! It's all in Southeast Ohio. It's all inexpensive or free because it's a very poor part of the country (SE Ohio is designated as part of the Appalachia Region).

I love road trips too! Why not head east to the Washington DC/Maryland/Virginia area? It is about 5 - 6 hours away and you'll find a lot to do there. Go from Ohio to West Virginia - see Sidling Hill and walk to the top where you'll be able to see all Ohio, Maryland, and West Virginia at one glance. You can head over to Harper's Ferry and maybe spend the night at an inn. Then, visit swing by Frederick and see the beautiful mountains - head over to Rockville for shopping (try rockville pike). You can even head up to DC for a day to see the museums (I heard the spy museum is good) - buy a one day pass for the metro system and you can go to all different sorts of spots for a flat fee of $6 per person on the metro. You could take in a show at the Kennedy Center (sometimes there are some for free - check their website) if you are an arts person - or down to Georgetown for some of the nightlife/jazz clubs. You can also head on down to Luray Cavern or take a ride down Skyline drive in Virginia if you want to stay in a more natural setting - but at this time of year I'm not sure how beautiful it will be (it is gorgeous in the fall!) If you like to take pictures - you'll love taking them here. Then you can head back to Ohio. The drive from Virginia to Ohio is approximately 6 - 7 hours. If you decide to do something like this one tip. As you plan your trip, if you have to be on 495 or 270 (around rockville to tyson's corner) try to avoid driving there during rush hour (7 - 9:30 a.m. and 4 - 7 p.m.).

Since you want to do this while leaving, depends on which direction your headed. In Columbus there is a German section that is pretty neat (about 1 day's worth of stuff) In southern Ohio on the east side is Marietta, first town in Ohio, to the south west there are several indian burial grounds such as Serpent Mound. there are also serveral cave areas in south east ohio, in Hocking county there is old mans cave and ash cave, in Bainbridge there is 7 caves
In northern Ohio there is the Amish country. In Dayton there is the air force museum. (this time of year this is best as it is inside and free)

all of these are either free or very low cost. For a more commercial and more expensive in Sandusky there is Cedar Point, and just outside Cincinnati there is Kings Island
