I made the switch from PC to mac a few months ago, with the new imac. I'm going to college next year, and for Christmas I'm getting a laptop. I'm deciding between macbook and macbook pro. I was thinking the white 2.2 ghz, but once I added more memory and hard drive (is this needed?) it's only 200 less than the cheapest macbook pro. If someone could go through the pros and cons of each (for someone who is pretty computer illiterate.. like I'm not even sure what the hard drive does...).

If it helps, I'm going to be majoring in writing, but the kind I'm doing is in the media department, so I'll be taking media production classes and such.

I should also add that the macbook pro is refurbished. The only difference I can tell about the refurb to the regular one is that 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) isn't a a double layer. What does that mean?

And has anyone had a bad experience with a refurb. and does it mean that it wont last as long?

Now that you know its refurb, do you still think I should take the macbook pro over the macbook?

Macbook
+ Highly portable
+ Powerful enough for everything bar games
+ Value
- Not good for games

Macbook Pro
+ Bigger screen
+ Higher resolution
+ Slightly faster performance
+ Can play games (Still no Desktop or XBOX!)
- Not as portable
- Expensive

Personally I would probably choose the MacBook Pro (if you can afford it, which you probably can our you wouldn't be asking this question) as your computer is going to be your stereo, possibly your tv, basically it will be your central entertainment area.

Definitions ...
RAM = The memory that your computer has 2 GIGS are better than 1, 1 GIG is better than 512 MB.

Hard Drive = This is where all your data is stored along with the operating system. The more room you have the more videos, movies, music, pictures (porn) you can store on your computer.

Operating System (OS) = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system

Hope this has helped you. Best of luck in College/University

Either one is a good choice. The Macbook Pro Core2 Duo has the Intel Chip and can run either or both Operating Systems OSX 10-5 and Windows.
