There are a few different ways to hook up a DVD player to a TV
You may have all or only one of them
the following list goes in order from best to worst

HDMI - a single cable with a flat plug that carries both audio and video
Component - these are the red, blue, and green cables and need to be used with red/white audio cables
S-Video - a single cable with a round plug also needs the red and white composite cables for the audio
Composite / RCA - these are the red and white cables for audio and a yellow cable for the Video

If your DVD player is HD Blue Ray or an upconvert then you would want to use at the very least Component cables.
Also the picture can only be as good as your TV will allow, If your TV is Standard Definition it is time to consider an upgrade to digital

How do you have it hooked up? It would also help to know the make and model of TV and DVD player you have.
