Because it's a creative outlet.
I write quite a lot of poetry, but I have never submitted any for publication. This is partly because I don't know if it's good enough, and partly because I wrote it for ME ~ to get thoughts and ideas out of my head.
I have also spent the last 10 years trying to write a novel. It is based on a sort of alternate reality I created for myself. My early attempts at writing it down were awful, and the entire thing has evolved greatly since I first thought of it. I'm now at the point were I may again consider writing it down.
But, this is not because I want to sell it, but because it is a part of my creativity ~ and it would be good to let some of it out of my mind!

I like to write because I feel the need to. I just have to write and I feel good if I can create something like that. It's fun sometimes, when I don't get "writer's block." I'm almost always thinking "oh, that would make a good story!" when I hear anything interesting. Even though this doesn't involve much creative writing, I've been keeping a Journal since I was 8 years old, and more so since I was 13! (I'm nearly 19 now)
I don't think I would ever just write for the money...and I don't even write because I expect to be published, I write just because...mostly for myself.
As for other writers out there, it could be a form of self-expression, or maybe they like to entertain others with their stories, maybe they want to get something known to a large amount of people, or of course I'm sure there are those who write for the money. But I would think if someone were going to spend lots of time writing, it should be enjoyed, because writing can often be a tedious task!

it's not always because they have something to say and want to get it out into the world, it's also because they can create a world of their own. Imagination is a wonderful thing and when you put it on paper in print it becomes alive. I love to write, If I'm ever stressed out or something, I write. It lets me escape- who cares if I'm good or not. A lot of books on the shevles inspire people, change their lives and to know that your book did that or could do that for someone is an overwhelming, yet amazing feeling. I think writing is a way of living forever, immortality so to speak. When you die, your books speak for you. I can't help but put everything into a book, I get such a blissful feeling when I write and I don't think I will ever stop. Especially when you start writing about a conflict or rising action, my heart beats faster my hand writing gets messier- I put myself in the position and describe everything I see mentally, I emmerse myself in whatever I'm thinking and it sometimes takes over me. That rush and sense of feeling is like a drug- you'll keep writing just to feel it again.

The same thing could be asked of musicians and painters and any other artist. They create because it satisfies some part of them to express an idea, an emotion or an opinion in an artistic way.

Light, knowledge, insight, findings, discovery.
There's, just as well, a giddiness and a height that novels offer in their production.
As well as the spellbinding power that they offer, exceptionally giant books, and the cash motive.

For me, it's better than letting my ideas get muddled. I write to stay focused, and I do it for the entertainment it offers to those who read it. I hope to be published one day, but pleasing my friends and myself is more important than pleasing a publisher.

That's a good question...I just have written my whole life, but it's never earned me any money.

I couldn't personally, but I think that there are two main reasons:
a) because the author has something to say.
b) because the author wants to be famous or feels that they can "write".
