YES!I am so fed up of these old wives tales!Of course you can wash your hair and bath and shower.I am an nurse and you take my advice. You can even go swimming during your period provided you use tampon as opposed to sanitary towels.Light exercises is good for you during your period and a balanced diet helps eliminate cramps.Iyou do suffer from period pain a hot water bottle to your belly or back can give you ease. Also your G.P or Pharmacist can offer advice on medications that can eliminate period pain that's only if you are experiencing period pain. You should also get some literature on periods and menstruation and have a chat to your Mum or a friend about things.Of Course you can wash your hair.Take care hope this bit of advice helps you.

I'm a mum and a grandmother and I always used to wash my hair when it needed washing, even if I had a period, with no ill effects. My daughter did the same and my grand-daughters do too. This is probably something your grandmother told your Mum, but I would call it an old wives' tale.
Edit: I was intrigued by this, as I'd never heard this before, so looked on the net; this is from the site below: 'You shouldn't bathe or wash your hair during a period - MYTH
Rubbish! Some women perspire more during their periods, or find their skin and hair becomes greasier, so it's important to keep clean and fresh.'

It hard to believe in this day and age that these rumors still are being perpetuated. There is no reason not to wash your hair during your period. You can even bathe and shower. In fact it will help with cramps. You cannot catch a cold from going out with wet hair either. And you don't have to dry it right away.

That is one of those classic idiot things "Mom's" used to repeat without applying logic. Washing your hair has no effect on having headaches now, later or ever. In fact it might someday make a headache BETTER, not cause one!!!

You can do what ever you normally do when on your period. Your Mother is apparently stuck in "old wives tale central" and needs to be brought into the real world. BTW, you also don't need to be put in a separate tee pee until you are "clean" again either!!!

Be nice to mom but ignore that advice and be clean and neat. You will feel like you should, normal. For some reason these old wives's tales have lingered in spite of the education available to everyone now.

Good luck and happy washing!!!

Yes you can wash your hair during your period. I wash mine all the time when I'm on my period and I've never got a headach from it. I can't really see how tipping water and shampoo over your head can affect you during a period. I thinks it's just an old wives tale.

Your poor mother. Her mother told her that....and I bet HER mother told her that, too. It's an old wives tale. Of course you can wash your hair during your period. Another old wives tale was that you were not supposed to take a bath when you were having your period. Ewww! Can you imagine? Our poor relatives not being able to bathe at the time of the month you REALLY need to bathe the most??!!

I guess by your question that you are only just a beginner with your periods?

Not knowing you personally, makes me hesitate in answering you.

Your mother is the best one to answer this because she knows your history, and is it not possible that she is talking from experience?

I have absolutely no problem washing my hair when on a period, but as someone else has all ready said, having showers is best because you do not soil the water.

I hope this helps a little, but you must understand, that to stand in the shoes of your mother would be wrong of me, when I do not know you.

ie just a tip: If you do have a shower in the future whilst on a period, have a piece of toilet paper ready to grab afterwards, because if you are heavy then it will drip before you get out of the shower, but the toilet paper holds it whilst you are drying yourself, and after, just flush it away!

The two are not linked in any way. Actually, perhaps you could even go to a salon and get a wash and style/cut! I did that (didn't get much cut off but oh well) and I felt AWESOME afterward - which is a really good thing when you're on your period :P
