it's about clever manupulation of the market. dvd's are released when the popularity of the movie starts dying down or in anticipation to a shopping season like the holidays. whoever owns the movie can control when the movie comes out on dvd, and the dvds usually come out quicker before xmas and in the spring because people want to see movies in the theaters in the summer.

It usually depends on how well the movie did in theaters. If it tanks, then it usually comes out within a month or 2. But if the movie does well, they try to keep it in theaters for as long as possible to keep selling tickets, and then eventually put it out on DVD after 4 to 6 months. If it's a Christmas movie, sometimes they'll wait a whole year to put it on DVD so that by then it's X-mas time again, and people will be more likely to buy it.

Usually movies that aren't doing well will come out on DVD faster. Movies that are doing well at the box office will stay in theaters longer and, therefore, take longer to come out on DVD.

Its all a matter of how it does at the boxoffice. For example, Monsters Inc. took about 10 months to finally get a DVD release after the Theatrical Release. But Disney and PIXAR didn't have to worry about it because everybody loved it and everybody was planning to buy it. But take a film like Surviving Christmas. Everyone hated it and it flopped at the boxoffice. So Dreamworks managed to release it on DVD about only 2 months after the theatrical release because had they waited longer, nobody would remember it, care about it or be interested in it anymore.

when a movie makes big bucks like High ScHool Musical or Shrek they wait for awhile so they make more money off if it- they basically wait for the rush to be over and thn wait a little longer then it goes on dvd.
if its a bad movie or a bomber people dont go to see it because others have told them how bad it was, so generally the movie goes on dvd quicker. than the good ones.

Because they didn't make enough profit in the box office, so it comes out on d.v.d. faster to make up for lost sales. That's why the bad movies come out faster on d.v.d.
