central Asia, while the central plains of the interior United States is not a desert?

the gobi desert is surrounded by mountains(himalayas) and the mountains of china and to the north the moisture that might fall there has to cross all of siberia where it falls as snow and ice. the short answer is that no moisture reaches the gobi whereas the plains of north america are wide open to the gulf of mexico and the pacific ocean. check it out on a map.

The Andes are in S. America.
It's because the Himalaya mountains keep weather from blowing into that area.

Weather patterns make for more rainfall in the continental US. Isn't the amount of rainfall the determining factor in calling a region a desert?

I believe it has to do with the direction of the trade winds and the height of the Andes mountains.
