an atheist does not admit to hidden depths, to a higher self. All they consider themselves to be is the really smart wind up toy that they are. Atheists...don't you ever think there's more to your life than what your five very small and limited senses allow you to see?

I'm asking if YOU don't think that YOU have hidden depths that others CAN'T see.

and when you ask, why does there have to be more, do you mean more than our five senses can know? I don't know. But there are. We can't see ultraviolet. But bees can. There are MANY things that exist that our 5 senses don't know about. Don't you see how similar you are to a fundamentalist christian? some things you JUST WON'T THINK ABOUT! Why not?

Joan. I disagree. Having a purpose in life doesn't imply god at all. Take yourself. You don't believe in god. But you know that there is such a thing as a shovel. And a shovel has a purpose. To dig dirt. That's IT'S point. Since a shovel is part of the universe, and the shovel has a point, you can't say the universe has no point. There are at least SHOVELS that DO have a point. TO DIG DIRT.
---then comes your question, and my response is--- their MAY be a point that we don't see just yet. You don't plan on never reading another book again, do you? So maybe YOU are the point.

There is no point.

Think about this: You likely think you have a purpose in life. That implies there is some god with a purpose for you. That would make you just like, for instance, a shovel. Without someone who needs a shovel for some purpose, the shovel has no purpose.

Think about this: Unless you are Einstein or Napolean or someone very important in world history, who will have a clue as to who you were in 500 years? Or 200 years. Or maybe even 100 years. Every little "important" thing you do every day in your life will be forgotten soon after you die.

As an atheist, I am content to enjoy my life and live as evolution allows. What else do I need? I know I will die and that will be the end of it. My ego is not so great as to think I will never die and have some kind of afterlife. As Popeye would have said, "I yam what I yam and that's all that I yam."

That doesn't mean I can't know about ultraviolet light and XRay vision, etc. It just means I can marvel at it, but recognize I can not see it with my naked eye..

Edit: I didn't expect us to agree! The point I was trying to make is that a shovel has no purpose unto itself. It might have a purpose for me, but not for itself. You asked for serious answers and I was trying to be serious and tell you how I think.
