I know lots of people that do things for charity on Christmas. Most people volunteer at nursing homes, or at soup kitchens. If you volunteer, you're always making someone happier :)

I would go to a local center, and help out the homeless, or a nearby hospital to see the people that may need cheering up. I personally like to go a week before Christmas and visit people with AIDS and HIV, who may not make it to the holiday, and give them a little of my time to show I care. Another thing is to go to an animal shelter, and just sit with the cats and dogs, and try to find them homes so they don't get put to sleep. I'm not a christian myself, but those are just a few things I do to help out during the holiday season. You can do anything you think of, but those are the ones I find bring the most joy.

Why not volunteer to serve Christmas dinner to the homeless or something like that? You'll feel good and celebrate by making others happy, which is probably what you liked about your previous Christmas plans. By the way, I think spending time with her was great. I bet it was a bright spot in her life :-)

Volunteer to help someone out, I don't know exactly where you'd go in your area to find a place but if you ask around I am sure someone will point you in the right direction, there is always people the need some extra help or maybe even company through the Christmas season.

Ahh, Christmas, the time for enjoying the family. It's simple, spend your Christmas with any person or people in your family and have like some really nice Christmas dinner with them and opening gifts or however else will make it fun. I never celebrated Christmas before, but from what I saw on tv and in movies before, it is the one thing that makes me actually consider having kids if I get married later on.

Go to the nearest military base and adopt a family who's father/mother are in Iraq. They could use a good cheering up.
