I find this festival of self indulgence, greed and nauseating sentimentality utterly sickening.
Bah! Humbug!

I don't need or want to ruin other people's Christmas they do that themselves. Drink to much, eat too much, massive family rows and spend themselves into debt.
I shall lock the attic door and read a few good books until the madness is over.

Yes, I hate it so much that I'm considering migration......to Sudan!
Nah, only joking.
I have thaught about going on holiday to another country over Christmas though to avoid the anual nonsense, being forced to mix with family that I don't really like very much, spending money that I can ill afford in overcrowded shops, dredging around town and getting poked in the eye by silly old people with umbrellas who arn't watching where they are going, buying peolpe really deicent presents and then getting something completely **** in return that I neither need or want then theres the tacky decorations and all that **** afterwards, I wish I could just ban Cristmas in my house, that would be great.

The actual concept of Christmas as it is supposed to be is not a bad one. I do, however, hate what Christmas has become; a marketing, obligatory onslaught of commercial demands and propoganda. It disgusts me to see Christmas displays in stores while am shopping for my kids Halloween costumes.
Christmas in all honesty is a competetive holiday created by the early papacy to keep up with the festivities of the pagans and Jews. The so-called Jesus wasn't even born at the time this celebration occurs. I would rather celebrate Saturnalia as the pagans had (it lasted much longer with more risque perks!!).
So, in conclusion, the ideal family get together after the harvest time celebration is a nice concept, but the corporate filth it has become is shameful.

I can't honestly say I hate and loathe it, but I do think the secular part of it is WAY over-done. I think it can be fun and cosy with a Christmas carole sing-along, a pot-luck meal, exchanging simple gifts, and attending a church service by candle-light. But, I can understand your feelings.

From a purely psychological stand-point, many people become depressed, stressed, or simply irritated when they find it impossible to live up to the picture-perfect ideal of how the holiday is "supposed" to be celebrated. Not to mention the fact that many families are in debt the rest of the year from charging gifts they acutally can't afford.

Sadly, clever and aggressive marketing, as well as the all-mighty dollar has caused the original meaning of the holiday to become lost in mountains of wrapping paper and empty bottles of expensive scotch whiskey.

Hang in there, and celebrate the holiday in a simple style that suits only you.

I don't think I feel quite as ardently about it as you do, but I do dislike having to waste my time and hard earned money shopping and buying gifts for people that I really don't give a danm about, simply because I know they will gift me and I get this obligatory feeling I should. I guess that's a problem with having a conscience. I do rather like the festive gatherings of good friends and celebrations honoring the birth of Christ that Christmas is really about though.

Assuming you are an American, I bet you can trace your ancestry to 'Pilgrim Father' Puritans... they didn't like Christmas either (too indulgent!). Why don't you just relax, have drink and a mince pie with some good friends, and enjoy the day? You might find you change your mind - just like Ebenezer Scrooge. Happy Christmas, anyway! :- )

I really hate all the crass commercialism, the pressure to buy, buy, and buy more and the phony platitudes. Oh, and the freezing cold weather, cheesy Christmas songs and the annoying Christmas spirit. Other than that---I'm good.

I agree. So, in my family we center it just around the little ones. And try not to over do that. I have seen my grandkids worked into a frenzy, get overtired, start mis-behaving. It is really not a healthy activity even for kids when it is over done.

It does suck.....in general.

In our house we only buy what we can afford. We spend all our time decorating and baking together. Church is a BIG part of our celebration too. It's the joy of the season, it's what YOU make it... Merry Christmas grumpy...:)
