Hey..not asking for money. My daughter is multiply disabled and we live in a 2 story home. She weighs almost 80lbs now and it is really hard to carry her up and down the stairs for baths. She has a waiver that is paying for $10,000 of the stairlift (YES, they really do cost that much..I couldn't believe it!) but we have to come up with about $2000. Hubby is in school full time and works fulltime so he has no extra time to get additional work and with her health needs I can't work. I have to be available at a momemt's notice for her and have never found a job to accomodate that.....SO, anyone have good ideas for fund raisers or know of any funding sources that we could utilize. She has Medicaid and they don't cover stairlifts...apparently it's not medically necessary for her to be CLEAN. The lady from medicaid told me just to give her spongebaths...I told HER to take spongebaths for a week and see how SHE felt...anyway, I digress. Any ideas?

Joox...I feel I was fairly specific. I want to know if anyone has ideas on how we can come up with 2000.00 that we do not have! And how can you "be sure" we have a "powder room" downstairs? Our house has one bathroom and it is upstairs. And yes, we were aware of our daughter's needs when she was younger. Our house needs a lot of work and we would not be able to get enough to get another house in the condidtion that it is in. Your post was inflamatory, accusatory, and downright rude. I prefaced my question that I wasn't asking for money because I'M NOT. I wanted to be very clear that I wasn't asking for donations but ideas for fundraising or resources. The fact that you cannot understand that and assume that I have ulterior motives for stating that just attests to how cynical you are. Geez, I don't think you offered one constructive idea in your whole post. Thanks so much!

www.rettsyndrome.org if you'd like to see the disorder that my child faces. http://hometown.aol.com/angelsunshne94/home.html is the link to a very old webpage that I did for her...she is the "des" in aly_des. I'm "Smommy" and she lives with us. My house was built in 1940 and it DOES NOT have any type of "powder room" or whatever you want to call it on the ground floor. It has ONE bathroom on the second floor and that is it. How dare you judge me or make assumptions about my motives. Of COURSE I took offense, you were questioning my integrity. I most defintely have a child with special needs and she really needs this stairlift and I will say once again (like the first sentence of my original post stated) I AM NOT ASKING FOR MONEY you obtuse little man.

Sorry to hear about your circumstances - Im just adding one extra thing .. this is a URL that you could go to and sign up. this place has been around for years- and they do help people. I know i've sent money in. Its people like you and I that can send money in - or request something that you need. I think this has even been on Oprah.
so- was just thinking you could maybe try this.

modestneeds.org

Or, if it comes down to it..maybe you can sign up for a carecredit creditcard - they give you 18 months no interest - it is for medical needs
www.carecredit.com

As for the guy that said that most houses have ONE bathroom downstairs---well-- he is totally wrong.. TWO of my sisters have 1 bathroom in their house..and both-- are located UPSTAIRS... so- to the guy that went on and on about you trying to get money - he has NO CLUE!

I feel for your situation here BUT just exactly what is your question? You failed to mention where you live which would be a great help here so people could research charities in your area.

The way you start by saying "Hey..not asking for money." is usually the same line telephone soliciters, transients and salesmen approach you. People use the generosity of the public and take advantage of the season of giving all the time. Be a little more specific about your case here and maybe you will find better answers than you are recieving here. With the way you phrased your question the best you will get is an email from an unknown person offering to put cash into a pay-pal account for you and this triggers my curiousty of just how honest you really are. I am not doubting you personaly,it is society and the way people are today that I don't have 100% faith in.
Let us know what part of the country you are in and maybe someone can come up with a charity that wil look into your case and help you out.

When your daughter was younger you were aware of her condition.....didn't you ever consider moving to a 1 level house? If the house has 2 levels then I am positive you atleast have a powder room downstairs. Remove the vanity area and install a shower. It can be done for less than $1,000.00 and i am sure you can get a contractor to donate his time to do the work.

EDIT: Aly I'm glad you took offense because it only shows me that I was probably correct and you are only here to seek financial gain. Were you aware that it is against the policy here to solicit? First off lets talk about the bathroom thing..... Any house with 2 floors has atleast 1 bathroom in it so I don't doubt that yours only has one.what i disagree with is that I have NEVER seen a two story house with only 1 bathroom and that bathroom was located on the second floor. They 99.9% of the time put it on te main floor because it keeps guests from being snoopy while going up near your personal bedrooms to "innocently" use your only bathroom. You di not even seem to comprehend the term powder room and I find that amusing. FYI a powder room is what builders refer to when they are building an extra bath without a bathtub or shower. It contains a toilet and a sink vanity. Your home should have one of these on the main floor since you have a full bath upstairs.Obviously you bought your home sometime in the late 1800's-early 1900's since you must send your guests to an outhouse or chamber pot located in a kitchen closet. My original post was informanative, honest and inquisitive since I was willing to research your area for charities mentioned online that would help you.I somehow now even doubt that you have this handicapped child you mentioned since if her condition as you described would have known what charities and support groups were ready to assist you.Hospital staffs are not only trained to treat a patient medicaly but are also trained to assis you and point you in the right directions for emotonal and financial support. I wish you well but at this point I doubt you will find a fool to give you $2,000.00 cash after reading this post.

I am really sorry for you, I know medicade and they can be terrible!!!

Any ideas for a fund raiser, I have some, why don't you ask your church, for help, ask your family to start a fund at a local bank where people can come in and donate.

It is the holiday season, so call up your local tv station and get on the news and tell them your problem and all the issues that you are going through, and that you need help, believe me, where I live, there is lots of people that do that, and you will not believe all the help from society after people here their story!!!!

Churches, and groups, and even schools will get into this!!!

Just alert the media and ask for help!!!! Believe me, there are people out there who want to help, but just do not know how to help unless they hear your story.

Check with the local health department or social services - there has to be a community resource available for times like this - Try vocational rehabilitation. If your doctor is in school she should have counselors and an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) - In regards to this IEP, she should have a list of services available to her while at school -BUT these agencies don't stop at the school - they will also make sure your daughter receives maximum care at home by providing any thing she needs to live healthy and happy. She should qualify for additional assistance - Start with the local health dept - they can lead you in the right direction

Are you members at a church? A lot of times they can have spaghetti dinners, or something along those lines, to raise money. Even local firehouses are sometimes willing to do things like that too.

I know where I live if there is a family in true need, you can write up a little story of her situation and need, print off about 20 of them and tape them to empty jars with lids and drop them off at different stores and people in your area can leave donations in the jar. You could also ask your local newspaper to do a story of your situation and need and people WILL help!
