5 gallons is not large enough for the Goldfish, much less a puffer. Also if the temperature will be cool enough for the Goldfish,it will be too low for the puffer,or vice-versa. And if you can keep them alive long enough together, the puffer will strip all the fins off of the Goldfish.

Cycling tank: If you are going with the dwarf puffer they do best in a planted tank so I would recommend adding live plants first. The plants will generally bring in enough bacteria that the tank will not go through a major cycle. If you don't add plants I would recommend doing a fishless cycle. Throw a small piece of uncooked shrimp (the kind you eat) and then test your parameters daily. The ammonia will spike then zero, then the nitrites will spike then zero and your nitrates will begin to go up. After your nitrites zero out the cycle is done. Remove the shrimp and you are ready to go.

Dwarf puffers can't really go with much of anything. About the only thing you can put them with is otocinclus (dwarf sucker fish) because they are they are the only things the puffers won't bother. Dwarf puffers are a tropical fish that do best in a small planted species tank. They are the only commonly kept puffers that are true freshwater fish. While some may take flake food they will generally only eat small live (or sometimes frozen food)

Putting them with the goldfish is a definite no. Other than the fact the puffer will harass them goldfish are cold water fish and the puffers are tropical so they have different requirements

No you really should not mix gold fish with a dwarf puffer or really any other tropical fish. The main reason is that gold fish are cold water fish and like temps around 70F. The puffer will like it about 80F. The size of your tank will limit you greatly on what you can put into it. You might get away with a male and female puffer but it would be tight. Here is a site that talks about Dwarf puffers.

Because you wouldn't want to over crowd the tank with fish you might go for live plants to make the tank more interesting.

Good luck

You don't seem to know much about fish, so I wouldn't recommend a puffer. Dwarf puffers should really have a 10 gallon, species only tank. Dwarfs are incredibly aggressive. They are also tropical and their needs dont fit the goldfish's needs. Please don't get a puffer, wait a couple of years and some more knowledge and wisdom first.

Dwarf Puffers should live by them selves. There are only a couple types of fish that can be with them.

Fill the tank crammed with water upload clear out gravel all your tank goodies create ammonia on your tank in various distinctive techniques which comprise including ammonia immediately or letting nutrition rot in the tank or utilising fish you do not care on the subject of the final option being merciless and not suggested. you will could desire to characteristic the nutrition or ammonia greater beneficial than as quickly as. that's all their is to it yet you will opt for to get assessments and watch your water for ammonia and nitrite spikes over the subsequent month or which you would be able to understand whilst that's comprehensive (whilst nitrite and ammonia are 0 and nitrate is contemporary) this could take a month minimum
