In medieval legend and literature it is said to be a chalice, a cup, or a dish and sometimes a stone or a cauldron. Christianity records it as the cup from which Christ drank during the last supper, and was brought to England by Joseph of Arimithea. It was supposed to have miraculous powers, like providing food and healing.
Thanks to Dan Brown's book, and others who agree, the "holy grail" is a code for Mary Magdalene. Its supposed to signify her womb, as she was the wife of Christ and the mother of his children.
The grail, as in the cup, dish, whatever, has never been found. There is no really good answer to your question....depends on what you choose to believe it is.

According to legend, it was the cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper, and believed to have been used at the Crucifixion to catch the blood when He was stabbed by a Roman guard (legend also calls this man Longinus, and tales of the spear also abound).

The term has also been used to support a belief that Jesus married and had a child, from whom the Merovingian dynasty (rulers of France in the early Middle Ages) were descended.

There is no really hard fact on which to base these suppositions--they are no more than speculations and theories. Since anything is possible, I will concede that it is an interesting premise, but one that cannot be proven absolutely, no matter what Dan Brown claims in The Da Vinci Code.

Good question! Some think it is a cup from the last supper, some an Icon, some a blood line. So I don't think anyone really knows. But scholars still quest for it.
