Chikamatsu Monzaemon, a playwrite who lived in the 1600s, about two generations after Shakespeare.

Zeami, maybe.
He is not only noh-play writer, he actually invented and developed the noh-theater in Japan. He also wrote a study of the art of acting, the perconification and the stage performance as a whole.
