A thousand pardon for interjecting Oh Great Wizard - most Americans would never heard of it because (and I may be wrong about this - but...) from what I have heard, it is an illegal substance over there.

I have heard of stories of people having a jar of Vegemite in their luggage and was confiscated at customs. Apparently it contains something that is banned by the FDA (or some reason to that nature)

I hope this clears it up a bit.

Just got through reading what it is. It doesn't sound particularly appetizing. I would try it, though... sounds kinda healthy. Even for a diabetic like me.

I always wondered what the group, Men at Work, were talking about in their hit tune, "Land Down Under" where they refer to a man from Brussels selling bread who gave them a vegemite sandwich. Now I know....

Thanks for asking... we didn't have Internet when that song came out and I didn't think to ask any Australians since then.

I've never tried it but I first heard of it in that MEN AT WORK song about "Would you like a vegemite sandwich?"

What's it taste like?

I'm Brazilian. I've had Vegemite for the first time, weeks ago, and I liked it :)

From across the ditch.

It is a favourite here and is far better than Marmite IMHO.

With butter on toast.
With lettuce in a sammie
With cheese in a sammie. (if toasted it tastes nice and sweet)
Stirred into a casserole or stew.

The "mouse" maybe right that there is some ingredient in it, that is not allowed in foods in the US.

Most Americans haven't a clue as to what it is. Sure, it's mentioned in a Men at Work song ("Down Under"), but it's still terra incognita.

They barely know about Weetabix

I don't know what it is but if I had to guess, I would think it would be some concoction of petrified meat mixed with vegetables which can be spread on breads

Its pretty much unheard-of here in USA.
'Cept for that song that goes, "Do you come from the land down under? Where women blow and men chunder."

Bet you Vegamite's got something to do with all that chundering going on.
