You see a meteor burning up in the atmosphere. If it's big enough, some of it hits the earth, then it's a meteorite. Some people believe falling stars can grant wishes, but alas, there's no scientific proof of that.

what luck!!..... think of it this way.... you may be the only one looking up just then.... you may have been the only one to have seen that particular lump of rock burning up in the Earth's atmosphere!!!.... and if you were, you are the only reason that rock had to even exist.... had you NOT seen it, it could have lived and died without anyone ever knowing about it...... sad, isn't it?.. to have existed without purpose..... but you DID see it and the sight was wonderful to behold....and it gave you something akin to joy, did it not?.... wonder, awe, whatever... it was enuff for you to come and ask about it....so it HAD purpose and it's existence was for a good reason!!!... and it's kinda the same way with you.... if you hadn't come and asked a question, we might never have known you!!!.... HI!!!.....

I just like to stare at it, and if I have a camera with me I try to take pictures of it. I've only seen them during meteor showers so there is actually time to take a picture.
