Hi there,

Well I have a very similar senario and my network works perfectly fine for me. Here is what I've done.

My office is about 250 or 300 Meters away from my home. Office is on 5th floor of a building and my home is on 4th floor of another building. There's a clear way between a window of my office which opens towards the balcony of my home - there are no interruptions (like trees or other buildings) in between.

Now I wanted to use the Internet connection I had at my home for my newly set up office as the providers were asking for too much time for a new connection for office. So I put my Netgear wireless router in my home balcony (which I talked about above) and tied (yes literally tied with a rope) a Linksys wireless adaptor (receiver) to the office window facing the balcony. This adaptor then connects to a server (windows PC) with a USB wire and acts as the Internet gateway for the other 2 PCs.

The point here is that netgear router is powerful enough to boost the connection upto that kind of a range where there's no interruption in between. Also, one important point i should mention here is that the way the netgear router and the linksys adaptor are put. the antennas of both these things should be parallel to eachother. They should not be pointing to each other.

I am not reveiwing what I have written and just wrote it the way it came to my mind. So sorry for any mistakes or ambiguity.

Regards

are you crazy? connecting a wireless router to your work's network??????

First is this your business or a company you work for?

802.1x Wireless typically is NOT secure and if the company catches you doing this they can charge you in a court of law for opening the network's access to the public.

This is exactly what I am going to school for NETWORK SECURITY and I've spent about 22 years with computers. you don't understand how "black hats" think or what they can do.
you don't understand the problems it can cause and the hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages this can do.

100m is kind of far I think. but yes, your theory would work if it can cover the distance. some say using pringles cans for "directional antennas" help but I've never done it.

set a wireless router up in the office, connect it to your computer there. set your laptop up with a wireless card and there you go. you should have a very decent connection.

the network might not notice the router, our you might have to do some IP juggling to get it to notice it. then just set the range of ips to 2 and set your ip on the comp and then the ip on your laptop. stay away from WEP routers. Stick with the WPA or WPA2. if you understand that then you might be ready.

I believe it should work.
Good luck. Check the policies at your job first.
don't ask directly, just do some quite investigating and reading.

it depends whether your saying 100 meters or 100 miles, but either way it might work depends on if you live in an apartment or if buildings are in the way, right now i live about 250 yards from the hospital in my town and i can leach off of there internet from my laptop if i wanted, also as long as the router is on you can connect the pc does not have to be on.

This is possible if you get a wirless router with enough power. You would not have to have the computer on as long as the router is on. Just make sure that you keep this network password encrypted with a wpa key as this will keep it safe from most people.
