By the Mid 1800's Liverpool was known as the second city of Empire, look at any world maps showing the Empire, two English cities are shown; London and Liverpool.

Liverpool was a well known and important international city long before The Beatles

I think that Liverpool has always been fairly well known because of the docks and stuff but yeah, I think that the beatles certainly made pretty much everybody know about it x

Didn't "put it on the map" but certainly made it a "household name".

Liverpool really wasn't known throughout the world until the Beatles but the dockland area really did export millions worldwide.

most Liverpudlians must be so annoyed with everybody mentioning the Beatles when hearing 'Liverpool'...
