Economy, education, crime, healthcare, housing and infrastructure, ... just about every issue that effects most people .. is all strongly effected by immigration. So immigration is far and away the number one issue.

Most of the issues are interrelated, so it's not easy to focus on just one as the most important.
For example...
If we ended the Iraq War, less money would be spent overseas on destroying/rebuilding Iraq. That money would not have to be borrowed from China or printed out of thin air by the Federal Reserve, which means that the value of the dollar would not be in such decline. Homeowners would not see inflation rates over 10% on food or oil, since the value of the dollar would remain more stable. They would be able to afford their mortgages easier, decreasing the chance of facing foreclosure.
Oil prices are also being affected by the Iraq War right now, especially due to a fear of the war spreading into Iran. Iran controls the Straits of Hormuz, through with passes 20% of the world's oil. If the war spreads into Iran, and they close off the straits, then there may be a worldwide economic collapse, leading to much higher prices for goods and leading to even higher foreclosure rates. If there is a worldwide collapse, our undefended southern border may become a huge refugee crisis with people fleeing Mexico, hoping that the US is more stable.
Also, Social Security would be more stable with the war over. People will always get their SS checks, but they may be worth nothing if prices keep increasing. People living on SS and fixed incomes will experience inflation rates higher than they can keep up with, leading to their eventual foreclosures.
Illegal immigration is a problem mainly due to the state of the economy now. Due to inflation and borrowing and the devaluation of the dollar, businesses want to keep as much of their income as possible, which leads them to hire employees for as little as possible. Because there are no wage controls on undocumented workers, they can be paid very little, businesses can keep prices lower and keep more profits.
Those who are strong advocates for/against abortion and gay marriage make up a large voting bloc, in many elections. Obviously, those against both seem to be the most vocal and are associated with the Christian Right, which has, in large part, supported the Iraq War, which has caused the devaluation of the dollar and higher foreclosure rates and gas prices.
So, without addressing all of the issues at once, it is hard to focus on just one as the single most important. If we solve one, it won't have a substantial impact on the rest. But, my vote, if we could only stop one, would be to end the war in Iraq, and not spread the war into Iran.

Economy is the most important issue that must be carried by a candidate because it concerns the survival of the country.

I feel that securing our border then implementing the Fair Tax should be our priorities. The War will go on regardless. Though I must say God Bless the Troops and keep up the great work. Your country is proud.
