I'm starting to collect different types of paper money, specifically US currency. I have a few that I have started with so far but because of their age, are pretty dirty. How can I safely clean them?

If the currency is that dirty, do not worry about damaging it during cleaning; it will not affect the value.

US paper money can go through the washing machine in a pocket and not get destroyed. On the occassion that has happened to me, it has come out cleaner, but still not looking new.

I laid it on a sink counter and sprayed it with 409. Then I wiped it with a clean dry cloth starting in the middle and moving out to the end. Then I wiped it with a clean, wet cloth to remove 409. Turned and did the other side.
No damage. Then I ironed it between two layers of an old linen handkerchief till dry. No damage, looked good.
409 removed a lot of soil.

You should never wash, clean, or restore anything that you are collecting unless you have talked to a professional or antique dealer. I'd talk to at least two, actually. In most cases, collectors like to see accurate condition.

Through a cover business?

No, seriously! Don't wash your money or other collectibles as that will diminish their value.

If you're COLLECTING, you don't want to wash, clean, or launder anything !!

Now just for giggles, I used to IRON my money while I was ironing my uniform. Cotton setting, steam, no starch.

Go to the cleaners and tell them you have money that needs to be laundered.
