If by great, you mean losing 120 to 96 to the Utah Jazz who were playing without Boozer and Okur.
The Jazz had 70 points in the paint.
Hey Phil, maybe you should start coaching your team how to play defense.

Well, he COULD get it, if he:
1.He should teach his team some defence! In fact, the Lakers might actually have the worst defence if they continue to let 100+ points!(Utah-129 Lakers-95)
2.Bring back the stunning Lakers that were early this season!
(they beat Phoenix, Houston and Detroit.)
3.The simplest point of all win a championship!

your question doesn't even make sense. there are 29 nba coaches right now without shaq or MJ on their team, and a lot of them are successful. for example, why shouldn't flip saunders be coach of the year for his success without shaq and MJ?
phil hasn't even done anything impressive without jordan or shaq yet....don't get me wrong he is a great coach with minimal talent, but there are far more deserving coaches for this award.

they're doing something. its not essentially great. if they can post an above average regular season record, they might be considered.
stan van gundy has that honor for now, in my opinion.
good call, birdman.
