This is a very good question, yet deeply personal. Like you said, I am straight too so this is an issue that has never concerned me. My parents and brother would accept my sexuality, but I know they would be sorely disappointed (especially my mom). She was raised in an incredibly socially conservative family who did not support same sex marriage, amongst other issues. However, they are good people, just not very open-minded. I'm confident that all of my friends, give or take a couple would be comfortable around me. My friends are all socially liberal and support same sex marriage. I honestly can't think of anyone in my circle of friends who'd disapprove or avoid me based on my sexuality.

I'm a mystery to my family and all but a few very close friends. No reason to spoil the mystery.

No body really knows me, not even myself. This ignorance is not deliberate, it is just that none of us is completely "self aware" and none of us is even remotely close to being completely "other aware".
You may know something about yourself that you do not want to share with others. That's called "Keeping a secret."
On the other hand, people see us more clearly than we would like them to sometimes. They watch our actions which show them us in our true colours. To be really known by someone else we have to let down all our defences. That is a treasured experience.

I think that a family member can not always know who you "really" are. There are things you can tell them and things you can't.
I personally keep somethings to my self, I can not always share everything that goes on in my life with my family, as well as my brother and sisters.
Yet, it would be nice for my parents to understand and grasp how, now in days things have changed and that certain values from their childhood don't exist in this generation.

My family and two, maybe three of my friends know the real me. Once you've earned my trust, I don't hold back (but you better not break it cause you WON'T get it back). For everyone else, I'm a partial mystery.

I have a theory that there isn't one person in the world who knows absolutely everything about another person. We keep some things secret. I believe its part of human nature. Though ironically we never keep what should be kept secret a secret.

I am a total mystery to all. No one can figure me out, and it hurts that no one has even given a shot at it.
