Hi,
I would think that this person was hurt badly in the past when they helped or cared for someone else. They may or may not mean what they say, but they sound as if they are trying to convince themselves. People who are truly selfish won't even bother to explain. Trust me; I have seen true nonchalance, and they would just ignore you.
And the last statement is right; everyone deserves the best for themselves.

Sounds like defensive detachment. You can look it up, but it's like what others here are saying. Someone who has been hurt, trying to put up walls and push people away so they don't have the pain of the other people rejecting them or pushing them away.

This person has a personality disorder, like maybe Borderline Personality Disorder.
Either that or they were just being deliberately mean to the person they were talking to, to try to break up with them, or get them to go away permanently.
