ok. so i am stumped on which college i should attend next year. i have been accepted to West Virginia University, Pepperdine, and Arizona State. I love all 3 of them and all have great Elementary Education Programs (I want to be a teacher) and all cost about the same. i need help on how you guys decided on your college. or if any of you go or have attended one of these. how do/did you like it?

I applaud you for wanting to get out of state and experience new places. You can always go back home later, but you will feel much less provincial when you do so. Know that Arizona State is enormous, unlike Pepperdine. That can be intimidating to some people. On the other hand, Arizona State is probably a much better school academically. Pepperdine is prettier, but I'm sure you have been hearing about the fires in Malibu and the potential for mudslides. Pepperdine is a religious school, while Arizona State is definitely not.

Having graduated from ASU I can tell you it is huge and impersonal until you get into your individual program (and maybe even then). On the other hand, it's a perfectly adequate education, particularly if you are self driven and don't need much help from student counselors.

If you want to be a teacher, consider adding a minor to your plans, because Elementary Education is frequently looked upon as the sad step-child of most Universities (mostly because the feds are so involved in education that you have to spend a lot of time learning garbage to get through to the substance).

West virginia is all i know about. I had a good friend go there. He wanted to be a teacher too. He was an outgoing guy which means a lot....and got a good job. The town is really nice in terms of college experience. Some really nice bars/clubs.

I'm happy i didn't go there though....i'm Indian....was there for less than 20 minutes before a racist comment was aimed towards me. But once i got a few drinks in, i didn't care anymore :-).

Oh also if your football team wins a big game classes get officially canceled the next day.

Also i went to penn state, 40K at our main campus alone..110K ish overall (you really feel it football weekends). I really liked the big university feel which west virginia isn't.

ANyways those other guys have a point sorta......When you switch states you gotta get recertified to teach.

Have you been involved in any extra-curricular activities, such as choir, volunteering, religious groups, sports? Would you like to continue those in college (or start)?
Do you want a large school or would you rather have the chance of meeting a good portion of the other students in your field of study? - ASU is huge, Pepperdine is small to medium, and I don't know about WVU but I would guess it is medium to large.

Although tuition costs may be similar, cost of living certainly isn't. Pepperdine is located in one of the highest-income parts of the country - meaning things like toilet paper and groceries are going to be quite expensive.

Have you checked out the Princeton Review to see what types of students go to each school? (www.princetonreview.com).

Personally, I chose a college (initially) on the programs it offered, the size of the school, the size of the city, the location (I wanted to be far from home), the extra-curriculars offered, and the variety of students who attended. I ended up transferring, but used much of the same criteria the second time.

Good luck! And congrats on being accepted into Pepperdine - that is a great school!

a friend of mine almost went to pepperdine. she chose loyola instead. it was a location thing for her.

i can't speak for any of these, but there is an awesome education program at Freed-Hardeman University. it's in west tennessee (about an hour and a half from memphis). it's a christian university and the faculty and staff is awesome!
