At the moment the 8800GT is better in peformance but the HD 3870 are still using beta drivers. And looking at the previous trend with ATi cards is with better drivers released the 3870 will start to match the 8800GT and has potential to go on to peform better.
For the price the 3870 for me is a better choice its cheaper than the 8800GT, runs cooler than the 8800GT and holds promise when better real drivers are out. But strictly on peformance the 8800GT is better for now, but hey these cards have only been released for a very short time.
You can't just say Geforce is better and 3870 is better than 8800GT without giving reasons.

I bought the GeForce 8800GT 512MB recently and have had no problems it has excellent compatability and as far a performance goes it lives up to its name, I have had no problems, sometimes it even exceeds expectations.

I will always recommend ATI radeon 3870/512mb
It is worth buying it with all features and its faster than 8800gt which is costlier than ATI radeon 3870.

8800GT is still a little faster than 3870
Unless you could find one that is cheaper than 8800GT, its best to stick with 8800GT

I'd always go with nvidia. Nvidia is more compatible with other operating systems like linux so you're not limited to windows
