Not all tortoises hibernate, and the star tortoise is one that does not. Star tortoises do not hibernate in nature and are not supposed to hibernate when kept as pets either. If she is slowing down that much, she needs to be kept much warmer and have a UV lamp on her before she becomes very ill.

Yes, a tortoise will hibernate in the winter. To prevent this, you need to put a light on over him to simulate sunlight and let him get plenty of heat. Turn the light off at night so he recognizes day and night. You should also have a ceramic light over him at all times, because if he gets too cold,he will get pneumonia and die.To help prevent diseases, wash him once a month with a very light betadine solution mixed with water to look like weak tea.Use a soft brush and do both sides of the shell. DO NOT use a black or red light called a night light on him as he will go blind.

seem at your tortoise's tail and if it curves one way its a boy yet whilst it stands proud its a woman and that they must be over 2 or 3 years of age to hibernate and your tortoise sounds like a herman cos mine seems comparable yet you should supply up feeding for no less than a week till now hibernation and seem for this happening around october november time solid good fortune and you tortiose seems large try massaging some olive oil in his shell sometime it makes it seem wealthy and make your tortoise ineffective happy! solid good fortune x

Star tortoises DO NOT brumate (the reptile version of hibernate) so something is wrong.
Give http://www.tortoisetrust.com a try- they have great care info.

yes they do. but in captivity they might just slow down, only wake up for several hours each day etc. i suggest you google 'tortoise pet care' to find some good sites that discuss this. i recommend that next time you get a pet you research it before you accidently harm it!
