Daylight savings was created to give more sunlight to harvest crops and still allow the kid that worked the farms to still go to school. Arizona and southern Indiana i believe are the only areas that dont do DST.

At midsummer, the length of the day varies from 12 hours at the equator to 24 hours at the pole. The day length gets greater the further from the equator you are. This means that in northern areas, the Sun is rising at 3 or 4am. It makes sense to alter the clocks so that it stays dark for another hour in the morning and you get another hour of daylight in the evening.

As you get closer to the equator, so you get less and less variation in daylength from season to season until it makes no sense to try daylight saving as you don't have the daylight to save. Most of the States in the USA have daylight saving as do most States in Australia but those closest to the equator tend not to bother.
