I'm not sure there is a "theoretical" definition, but a research center is usually an organizational structure within the institution which fosters research within a particular area, generally fairly narrow, and which serves as a unit which can apply for grants and approach donors to support such research. Some research centers also support journals within their field or put out working paper series.

Sounds bitter and whiny. Sure, there are genuinely nice guys who get friendzoned for a while, but if they're sincere they'll get snapped up by someone who thinks the world of them. And there are women who will use men's feelings for them to manipulate and control. What happens more often in my personal experience is that the "nice guy" persistantly misleads women over his intentions. He's so scared of rejection that he can't bring himself to make the first move, gives out a bunch of confusing mixed signals so you can't actually tell if he's into you or not, and expects the woman to read his mind.* Then, when she finds a more forthcoming partner, he will glue himself to her and try to split them up, undermining the relationship with disparaging comments and interference. When this doesn't happen, she will become one of those eeeevil sluts who only wants a jock. (The boyfriend is always a jock, even if he's five-foot-nothing and enjoys good standing in the chess club.) *In one case, literally. The chap in question kept telling me about his other gfs, comparing my looks to theirs in a very negative way, and insisting that he wanted a platonic friendship. Eventually he revealed that he had been interested in a relationshippy relationship after all--which I was expected to know via telepathy. No, really. Worst part is I had a huge crush on him but assumed I had no chance and accepted his friendship instead. If he'd just said something, I'd have been all over him like ants on candy, but by then I'd moved on.
